Vancouver Island, the largest island in British Columbia, is also home to the renowned Clayoquot Sound, BC's first United Nations Biosphere Reserve. Nearby are hundreds of smaller islands, including the Gulf Islands, known worldwide for their stunning scenery and relaxed lifestyle. Just a short ferry ride from Vancouver Island, these picturesque islands feature stunning natural beauty, tranquil retreats, and thriving arts and cultural communities. The main industries in the Vancouver Island region are forestry, fishing, and tourism. An intricate transportation network provides convenient access to the major centres, such as Comox, Nanaimo, and Campbell River, as well as the smaller towns of Tofino and Port Alberni. The city of Victoria, the capital of the province of British Columbia and home to the University of Victoria, is also located in this region. The Vancouver Island geographic region is served by two health authorities; Vancouver Island Health Authority and the Provincial Health Services Authority. |
