Lorna - Director, Clinical Operations Systemic Therapy
(from Alloa, Scotland)
"My sense of adventure, plus the appeal of working in a new country and Vancouver's worldwide recognition as the #1 place to live, is what led me to the BC Cancer Agency from my home in Alloa, Scotland" recalls Lorna Roe, Director of Clinical Operations Systemic Therapy. Now Lorna is able to share her positive international recruitment experience with other potential candidates from the UK and is preparing to welcome some new recruits to the BCCA's Vancouver Centre early in 2007. "I particularly appreciated the HR recruitment team's approach to assisting with my relocation. The support they provide to new arrivals - whether airport pick-up, help with finding accommodation, getting the children settled or providing candidates with the right contacts - is an important part of quickly and seamlessly integrating new nurses into Vancouver's wonderful culture and the BCCA", says Lorna.

The Nurse Vancouver website guides recruits through the process of RN registration and relocation. It also has a section called "You'll like living here". "It's true. I love the ocean, the similarity of the climate to home, the recreational opportunities. It was very easy to settle into the lifestyle here", says Lorna Roe.

Emma - Paediatric Mental Health Nurse (from United Kingdom)
"My husband and I had discussed moving to Canada for a number of years. Then I saw the Nurse Vancouver ad in my Royal College of Nursing Journal and in almost no time at all we were here," recalls Emma Gibson, one of 23 new C&W nurses hired from the UK. "For relocation novices who didn't know what to expect, the whole process was seamless and very easy. Whenever I had any concerns or questions, I contacted Linda Hand in Recruitment and she put our minds at ease," says Emma. Emma Gibson, a paediatric mental health nurse, began work at BCCH on December 4th.

In addition to the individual support provided by HR, the Nurse Vancouver website guides recruits through the process of RN registration and relocation. It also has a section called "You'll like living here". "After I got my offer letter, we came here on holiday last summer and knew this was the place we wanted to be" says Emma. On Vancouver's coldest day in 20 years, Emma Gibson's excitement was obvious. "I just practised walking the route to C&W so I know how long it will take me on Monday. I can't wait," said Emma.
